Alison Barrington is the granddaughter of society blueblood Amanda Barrington, who sits on the Board of Directors of General Hospital. Amanda, tired of Alison's habit of breaking curfew, relegated her fiesty, spoiled granddaughter to volunteering at the hospital.

Alison soon became friends with Jamal Woods and tried to help him out of a dangerous situation with a thug named Cedric. Alison's life was threatened when Cedric caught Alison snooping into his illegal activities. Alison was forced to kill Cedric in self defense; however, traumatized by the event, Alison blocked it out. Jamal found Alison by Cedric's body and to protect her, took the rap for the murder.

With Kevin and Frank's help, Alison regained her memory and exonerated Jamal. During the ordeal, Alison and Jamal fell in love.

Upon learning of Alison and Jamal's newfound love, Amanda became an obstacle to the new couple. She forced Jamal to stay away from Alison. Jamal and Alison decided to fool Amanda by convincing Jack Ramsey to pose as Alison's boyfriend to keep Amanda off their backs. However, Amanda eventually learned of the deception and threatened to disown her granddaughter. Alison chose Jamal and they moved in together. Eventually, Jamal and Alison, along with Jack, opened a bike shop in Port Charles.
